Preliminary exercise: Research and planning

Now complete the following tasks:

1) State the song you have chosen for your preliminary exercise.

Sabrina Carpenter:Nonsense

2) Choose at least three music videos similar to your concept and watch a clip or more from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing and mise-en-scene.

Handheld camera work followers her throughout the video it is mostly medium to close up to show her carelessness after her break up but still dwelling on her feelings. Editing cuts every time the line changes. She has a casual outfit and neutral  makeup with very high key lighting as it’s outside beach setting or in public restaurant. She uses soft facial expression to clearly portray how she feeling. Her costume is casual and very girly which portrays her femininity.

There are many camera angles from high and low and also handheld camera movements with close ups mostly. As the song is sad and about heartbreak the editing is slow. Firstly, their is an outdoor setting and then inside. She’s in a casual dress but the colours are muted to show sadness. She uses high key lighting but almost too exposed to show a sense of a fake reality she lives in since her heartbreak.

There are closeups on her crying, and slow motion shots from her walking. The use of slow motion shots means the editing is very slow and as it is in black and white it conveys her heartbreak and frustration even more. Her makeup is all messed up further emphasise her pain and distress and the fact the video is in black and white further relays the emotional aspect of the music video.

3) Write a short music video treatment for your extract (this is basically a script for your music video). You can find an example of a treatment here. If you are making your real coursework then feel free to use the treatment from your summer project.

0:19-0:50 : 30 Seconds

First line: Artist in bedroom fixing her makeup and picking up a call

Second line: changed contact name  and puts down the phone

Third line: rolls hers eyes and puts on a fake crown

Fourth line:  hears friends come so waves to them thinking and writing lyrics on a piece of paper

Fifth line: rips up song and throws up above her

4) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing (in a music video you will find you need FAR more shots than you think, particularly close-ups). These additional shots can be close-ups, alternative angles or something more creative. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word/Google Docs to set out your shot list - you can find an example here (this is from narrative filmmaking but the same format can be used for any video project).

5) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre and style of your artist? Plan your settings, costume, make-up, props and lighting.

Setting: home and vanity set up

Costume: pajama with flair

Makeup: heavy but still cute and fun

Props: fake crown, pen + paper, and makeup brush / makeup

Lighting: high key and natural indoor lighting with hint of outdoor sunshine?

6) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required, planned equipment and any other aspects you need to arrange.
