Sound analysis

 1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film:
  • Diegetic and non-diegetic sound
  • Parallel and contrapuntal sound
  • Sound bridges
Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip:
  • Music
  • Dialogue
  • Voiceover
  • Sound effects

In this episode from tv show Bojack Horseman, the main character attends an event underwater and the whole episode is based on the fact that he can not speak or use any dialogue. The diegetic sound is the popping bubbles and the seahorse speech. The non-diegetic sound is the background music which is parallel to the scene as the music shows reunion and finally goodbyes and when leaving sad music plays indicating the character Bojack feels some sort of attachment to the seahorse he helped get home.

 the loss of a presence that impacts daily actions and the aftermath of the isolation and emptiness that needs to be filled in in order to continue with a normal life. I used: pan’s, long shots, medium shots, close ups. i used contrapuntal sound for the second half to show the difference in emotion.
